“There should be some kind of regulatory mechanism for privately run educational institutions and we have already made a recommendation in this regard to the government,” the chairman of the Knowledge Commission, Sam Pitroda, told reporters here.
Mr Pitroda who was on an official tour to Orissa said priority should be given to quality education for eradication of unemployment in the country. “The country is producing large number of graduates every year but many of them have remained unemployed because of lack of quality education,” the senior technocrat said adding that priority should also be given to vocational training.
He said the Planning Commission’s decision to increase budgetary allocation in the eleventh plan for education sector had provided an excellent opportunity to the states to develop and improve the education system in their respective states.
“The Planning Commission has decided to spend Rs 3 trillion in the eleventh plan for education and this has provided the states a unique opportunity to strengthen and improve the education system,” Mr Pitroda said.
Replying to a question, Mr Pitroda conceded that there had been differences within the seven member commission on different issues but insisted that these differences were required for the healthy functioning of the commission. “It is good to have differences. It is healthy,” he quipped.
