Art movies have universal theme
Shruti I L
Award-winning Italian director Stefano Odoardi spoke to Metrolife on film festivals, Italian cinema and the support structure that independent movie-makers need.

On film festivals...

Festivals are a big boost to independent film-making, which is a major contributor to the art of cinema. However, it would do good to create a space for producers, independent directors and distributors to interact - create a market like situation, where directors can meet producers and discuss their scripts and can contemplate.

Even government support can go a long way in encouraging independent film-makers...

Definitely. Each government should establish a separate system of theatre for such cinema. At least, this can happen in Europe where there is money.  A system where a part of the profit from commercial cinema is diverted towards making parallel cinema can also be evolved. Also good actors are discovered by independent movie-makers and these actors may go on to become stars, thereby contributing to selling of commercial movies.

Do you see this becoming a reality?

For all these things to happen, two things are a must. First, a dialogue should take place between commercial cinema and independent cinema, instead of confrontation, and two, one should not expect commercial success from such cinema as they are all about dreams and vision. The only profit that can be made is by way of inspiring one to lead a better life. If this happens, more and more people will start working in this industry and government can earn in terms of tax. Both the art and the economy will progress. Cinema is a powerful tool, don’t make people flat by denying them this tool.

On Italian cinema...

Italian cinema was powerful once upon a time. But now I feel that it is losing its identity. Many directors have forgotten that Italian cinema has a history. And I sense a lack of content now. Also TV has become powerful. Personally, I feel closer to the cinema of the 60s.

Indian cinema as seen in Europe...

Indian cinema means Bollywood in Europe. But there is so much more to Indian culture and cinema. And this is what is seen in non-commercial cinema. While Bollywood is a phenomena in India, it is the art movies that have universal theme. But it is a pity that there are not many places to show this kind of cinema in Italy. In France, however, there are such places. Many films from America are screened in Italy, but I would call them entertainment rather than movies.

Youth and cinema...

A moment for cinema is a must in education, if the youth need to understand and appreciate the medium. Film festivals can also be held at  schools and colleges. Today, youth are watching good cinema on the Internet and TV. This should not happen as the sound and impact may be lost. Quality movies need to be watched on big screen. But it is a pity that there is a shortage of theatres.

On ‘White Ballad’ and future projects...

‘White Ballad’ enriched my life. I am grateful for the positive reactions I  have received. My next film ‘Mancanza’ will be on the universal theme - love. I will also be making ‘November’, a pessimistic view on the society. Films are my life and I hope to better myself with each one. I just follow my vision and urge independent movie-makers to do just that. Follow your ideas and never compromise.
