Film screenings
Twin celluloid treat for buffs
Subrahmanyan Viswanath

Suchitra Film Society’s monthly screenings feature two films at Suchitra, Banashankari II Stage on  Monday (Jan 14) and Tuesday (Jan 15) at 6.45 pm.

The Monday outing is with Bengalooru’s very own local lad Anand Subramanium’s maiden full length Hindi feature — Doosra. An alumnus of FTII, Pune, whose telefilm Vapasi inspired the much acclaimed and critically accoladed Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades, Anand’s Doosra is a tongue-in-cheek look at the nefarious world of fake currency notes.

The film

The film, technically savvy and polished, but tad slow to arrest audience’s flagging attention, is, however, a brauvra attempt behind the camera. The film revolves around a former underworld fake currency operator Raghu, on parole, who is once again pushed into the thick of things by mentor Printer Master Nayak, who has been two-timed by rivals leading to severe loss.

Knit within this subtle crime-thriller is also a family saga that of a mother who flies down from Canada to make it up with her school going child who has withdrawn into a cocoon of his own due to lack of sufficient parental attention.

The Tuesday fare spotlights on the stark and sensitive social Bangladesh film Nirontor (Forever Flows) directed by Abu Sayeed.

The film, which brings to fore life’s hardships in that country, captures the trials and tribulations of Tithi, the young and beautiful daughter of a lower middle class family on whose tender shoulders falls the responsibility of looking after the impoverished family.

Taking no sides, the film, in a dispassionate manner tracks the lives of Tithi, her family and the cross section of people Tithi, comes across in the course of her job as a street walker to which profession she takes to in order to support her family.
