Dhaka varsity sets ultimatum
From Hassan Shahriar, DH News Service, Dhaka:
Students of Dhaka University, the hub of political activities, staged silent demonstrations for the third day on Monday demanding the release of teachers and a fellow student detained after campus protests in August last year.

The Students Against Repression (SAR), a combine of Left-wing student organisations, set a five-day ultimatum on Sunday for the release of the detainees and the withdrawal of cases against them.

The SAR continued demonstrations on the campus through class boycotts, street graffiti, rally, silent processions and a cultural programme. The SAR’s leaders said they will switch to fresh agitation, including the formation of human chains on campus across the country if their demand was not met by January 17. The university’s Vice Chancellor said after meetings with the chief adviser and the army chief that they would be released after all legal processes were completed.

The new education adviser Hossain Zillur also made a similar comment. “Whatever verdict may come from the court in this case, the teachers and the student will be released,” he said.

Fifteen Dhaka University students and four teachers were charged in two separate cases for breaching the emergency rules.
