Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday had lunch with AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha at her Poes Garden residence here, and the duo discussed many issues, said BJP’s Tamil Nadu in-charge Ravi Shankar Prasad .
But the luncheon meet has raised speculations in many circles that the two parties may stitch an alliance for the next Lok Sabha polls.
The meeting that lasted for two hours was described by Prasad as “very friendly”. He also said Jayalalitha was a generous host who treated them to an “extraordinary lunch”.
“Jayalalitha appreciated the thumping victory of Modi and congratulated him,” Prasad said.
“We also discussed a whole range of contemporary issues,” he added, but did not elaborate.
Modi’s meeting with her over lunch hints at a reconciliation of the two parties ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
AIADMK and the BJP are already sharing a common cause on issues like anti-terrorism, tackling LTTE's threat to India and the Ram Sethu issue.
Jayalalitha’s party was a part of the second Vajpayee-led government from 1998 to 99, from which she bailed out predicting a mid-term poll.
Moreover, after that, she apologised to the people of Tamil Nadu for the alliance with the BJP, and further went on to say that she will never again make that mistake.
But that was forgotten after the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, when she took her party back to the BJP camp.
In the most recent case, she ditched the UNPA and told her party MPs to vote for BJP candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the Presidential polls.
She had similarly greeted BJP leader LK Advani after he was named BJP's prime minister-in-waiting.
