Karnataka High Court on Monday admitted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against leasing or letting out any portion of Sree Kanteerava Stadium Sports Complex premises in Bangalore or any other stadium premises across the State, for commercial events or in favour of private persons or institutions.
Petitioner K Patel Munegowda, a sportsperson of Bangalore, said the department of Youth Service and Sports(YSS) was letting out stadium premises in the State for different commercial events and purposes. Most of the time, the stadium premises are found occupied by event managers, obstructing regular practice of athletes and other sportspersons. He said, the authorities were ignoring the very purpose of establishment of such stadiums by letting them out for fashion shows, cinema related events, sales promotions, political rallies, he alleged.
The petitioner said that both indoor and outdoor stadiums in Sree Kanteerava Sports complex in Bangalore were being used for commercial events and the authorities were also leasing out a vacant space in the premises for parking facility of Mallya Hospital which was a private commercial institution.
The Division Bench ordered notices to State Government represented by YSS department, YSS Commissioner, Sports Authority of Karnataka and Secretary of Stadium Management Committee, Sree Kanteerava Stadium Complex.
