Aiming to make laptops a mass product, IT company HCL Infosystems, on Tuesday, introduced an ultra portable range of laptops at a starting price of Rs 13,990.
The new product — MiLeap — would offer users full mobile internet experience combined with PC functionality at an affordable price, HCL Infosystems Chairman & CEO Ajai Chowdhry told reporters here.
MiLeap would be available in two series — X and Y priced at Rs 13,990 and Rs 29,990 respectively. He said the new range of laptops will herald a new category of computing devices and open a wide range of new usage scenarios and application areas.
Pondicherry plant
Both the new products would be made at the company’s manufacturing facility in Pondicherry. It has another facility in Uttarakhand. The company’s two plants have a combined capacity of two million units.
He declined to put a number to the expected sales of the new laptops in the first year of their launch. The company would start shipping the units from January 26, 2008. Both models come with Intel processor and weigh less than a kilogram. The X-series would have both the options of flash-based and disk-based storage versions with a Linux-based operating system.
The high-end Y series would have multiple navigational features such as touch screen, thumb board, stylus, keyboard and touch buttons with Windows Vista as operating system.
