Opposing the Government’s decision to adopt speed governors to the public transport vehicles, Kolar bus owners’ association, district three-wheeler owners’ association, car owners’ association and tempo owners’ association held a protest in City on Wednesday.
Lorry owners and tempo owners have decided to hold a state-wide strike from January 20 against the implementation of speed governors.
Wednesday’s protest in City was in support of this. Members of various transport associations protested at Mekke circle and later submitted a memorandum to the Dy Commissioner in this respect.
Public transport
The number of public transport vehicles on the roads including buses, lorries, cabs, taxies, tempos and auto rickshaws is increasing by the day, thereby triggering tough competition. Adopting speed governors will further complicate the situation, explained vehicle owners in their memorandum to the DC.
For regulation of commercial vehicles, regional transport organisation of every district must hold regular meetings at respective district headquarters. Issues related to vehicular movements should be discussed and resolved in such meetings, said the protesters in the memorandum.
However, no such meetings are taking place in Kolar district. Hence, regional transport officials take unilateral decisions in issues such as giving permits and licences and transferring ownership rights. Corruption has spread to the roots in the transport department, accused the protesters in the memorandum.
They also urged for action to fix minimum auto fare in cities. N Ramegowda, Nayaz Pasha, Amjad pasha, K V Suresh Kumar and office bearers of various vehicle owners’ association took part.
