The farmers and buyers were involved in an argument over the prices of tur dal at the APMC market recently.
On the fair day, the farmers had come from far and wide with nearly 30 trucks and tractors full of tur dal. The price of the commodity ranged between Rs 1850 to 1900 last week.
But this week the prices had plummeted to Rs 1750 to 1790 that had enraged the farmers. But the buyers refused to budge and said that anything higher would mean a loss for them who also had travelled distances from Davangere, Chitradurga, Hiriyur, Tumkur.
As soon as the word of the argument got around, APMC Secretary Syed Mohiddin, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohan Reddy, CPI of city and rural V Mariappa, Gajendra Prasad, Traders’ association president Lakshman Gowda, R Raghavendra and others rushed to the spot to ensure that the situation did not get out of hand. After holding talks with all the concerned parties, the final rate that was agreed upon was Rs 1800.
This is not the first time that the APMC market in Tumkur has witnessed such an incident.
Ten years ago a similar argument over the price of ground nut took and ugly turn and one policeman and 6 farmers were killed in the shoot out.
