Jaipur's Aditya Singh sent tenth-seeded Chien Yao Hung of Chinese Taipei packing in the first round of the 107th LG Indian Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club here on Wednesday.
The first day of the Match Play championship was a poor day for the fancied golfers. Unheralded Kanishk Madan defeated Pakistan's top-ranked golfer Adil Jahangir; Siddharth Seth showed third-seeded Rudresh Sharma the door; Arshdeep Tiwana ended the hopes of defending champion Prabagaran of Sri Lanka, while Bangalore's IK Ponnappa stunned fifth-seeded Ajeetesh Sandhu. But top-seeded Jamal Mollah of Bangaldesh, his second-seeded compatriot, Shahid, fourth seed Rahul Bakshi, seventh seed Abhijit Chadha, eighth seed Pawan Kumar and ninth seed Amanjyot Singh faced few problems, all coming through with ease.
Aditya made pars on the first four holes, while Yao Hung, who had represented Chinese Taipei in the Doha Asian Games, could not even break par, handing a 4-up advantage to the Indian. However, the Taipei amateur reduced the margin on the sixth hole, thanks to a Aditya double bogey.
Another Aditya bogey, on the 10th, reduced the deficit. But the Indian made superb birdies on the 13th and 14th holes to go 4-up again. Even though he lost the next hole, he squared the 16th with a par to win 3 & 2. "I just wanted to make par and succeeded most of the times," Aditya said. "The first four holes proved crucial as I got off to a brilliant start," he added.
