Samajwadi Party (SP) led by Abu Azmi on Thursday staged protests outside the Juhu bungalow of socialite and a member of the Godrej family Parmeshwar Godrej, for hosting writer Salman Rushdie.
The party workers burnt Rushdie’s effigy and demanded that the writer be asked to leave India. The All India Ulema Association, has demanded an apology from the Godrejs, while warning them of total boycott of Godrej products.
“Ms Godrej by playing host to him has, in a way, made a mockery of the community. This is an insult to the Muslims of India. We appeal to Muslims to boycott Godrej products,” president of the Association, Maulana Ali Athar Ali said.
On his part, Rushdie was quoted in a newspapers as saying that, “I don’t make my decisions based on 25 goondas at the gate.”
