Bangalore City Lorry Transporting Agent’s Association President of A P Shanmuga Sundaram announced this to reporters after holding a meeting with the Governor and his advisors on the issue.
Armed with Supreme Court order to ensure the installation of speed governors to all commercial vehicles from January 1, the State government has been bracing up to implement it. In fact, the transport department has stopped issuing new licenses to new vehicles and Fitness Certificates to old ones as the speed governors are not installed.
The installation of speed governors is made mandatory with the aim of controlling vehicles going over speed and thereby avoid accidents. Once the machine is installed, the vehicles can’t move above 60 km per hour.
P K H Tharakan, one of the Governor’s advisors, said he has assured the representatives of lorry owners to protect their interest within the legal framework.
The Association in a memorandum submitted to the Governor stated commercial vehicle owners will incur heavy loss if speed governors are installed as it will limit the speed. Consumption of fuel will be more if speed governors are installed.
