On day one of the new year, when many corporate companies took a day off, it was an extended weekend for the employees.
The IT pockets in the City, including Koramangala, Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road, were without the regular bustle. Traffic movement in these areas was also less during Tuesday’s peak morning hours.
With the holiday coming in as a welcome topping to the festive mood, some chose to stay indoors, nursing hangovers or resting after the New Year’s revelries.
“A holiday on Tuesday worked just right for us because we managed four days off work at a stretch, by just taking leave on Monday,” reasoned Rohan Kher, who works in a telecommunications company. Sushma, a tax consultant, spent the day catching up with friends and watching movies at home.
Some of the movie theatres in the City hosted crowds bigger than normal for a weekday. The break also meant a much-in-the-wait trip to the neighbourhood park for some.
Late start
Some of the business establishments in the otherwise busy commercial pockets on M G Road and Residency Road had a late start on Tuesday, with the streets springing back to life only towards the later part of the day. The leftovers from Monday night — including the litter piles and strewn-around plastic — remained uncleared in some pockets of the City.
Hotels, pubs and restaurants that hosted parties into the midnight woke up on Tuesday sporting a hangover from last night. “This is normal for every January 1. The turnout will be less than normal in the day... However, the crowds were back by the evening,” said Nagesh, manager of a bar on Brigade Road.
