The scheme of distribution of cycles among eighth standard students studying in their high school, was implemented during the JD(S)-BJP coalition government. And for the last two years, this scheme was being implemented, for the benefit of high school students.
In this backdrop, several cycles were brought and kept at the premises of Pre-University Boys Government College, in Kolar taluk for the current year.
Earlier, the cycles were distributed by the respective MLAs in their respective constituencies. However, later on, they were being sent to the schools directly. The school authorities used to make arrangements to distribute these cycles from the hands of suitable people among the students.
As many as 2,000 cycles are being kept at the College premises. Eight labourers have arrived from Andhra Pradesh to fix these cycles. One labourer joins about eight cycles per day, thus, eight people fix around 64 cycles per day.
All these works take place on the College grounds only. The Hero cycle company has received the contract of supplying cycles to the schools.
The company has designed special cycles in green colour, only to be distributed among the school students. They have sent their spare parts and these parts are fixed by the labourers.
The officials of the Education Department send the total number of cycles fixed by the labourers, as per the requirement of each school. If Kumaraswamy made arrangements for the distribution of cycles among the high school girls, owing to the pressures of the Opposition party, Mr Yeddyurappa also extended the same facility to the high school boys also.
However, owing to political reasons, the scheme lead to a controversy and became a target for criticism. This scheme was indeed a boon for the students hailing from poor families and the Government was lauded for its implementation, as the students’ are benifitted.
