The State BJP on Tuesday demanded that senior Congress leader H K Patil immediately relinquish his post as Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council.
A delegation led by BJP State Secretary C T Ravi met Council Chairman B K Chandrashekar and submitted a memorandum in this regard. “When there is no ruling party, where is question of a opposition party or its leader?’, asked Ravi.
The memorandum stated that Patil was enjoying all privileges and perks provided to the post of leader of the opposition (equivalent to that provided to a Cabinet rank minister) despite president’s rule being imposed in the State.
Intervention sought
Ravi demanded the Council Chairman to intervene and direct Patil to relinquish his post and immediately surrender all the perks provided.
The memorandum mentions that in 1989 when president’s rule was imposed after the Assembly was dissolved, the then Leader of the Opposition T N Narasimha Murthy ceased to continue in his post.
The BJP has threatened to stage a protest in front of Patil’s office, if he does not relinquish his post in a couple of days.
