Congress swept mayoral elections on Tuesday, which saw triangular contest for two posts. It won all the three the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, to which elections were held in the premises of the Municipal Corporation.
A total of 35 councillors and one MP, who belongs to the Congress, decided the fate of those in the fray.
Congress’ Pradeep Chhabra becomes the 14th Mayor ever since the MC was formed over a decade back. Chhabra got 20 votes while BJP’s Gurcharan Dass Kala got 10 and BSP’s Jatinder Bhatia secured five votes.
Anju Beniwal also secured 20 votes to win the post of senior deputy mayor while Surinder Kumar Jagota of the BJP got 12 votes and BSP’s Sarita Devi managed just 4 votes. Harphool Chander Kalyan of the Congress becomes the new deputy mayor securing 20 votes defeating Gurnam Singh of the SAD-BJP, who got 16 votes.
