The Centre on Tuesday asked for a detailed report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the terrorist attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur and sought to offer intelligence and logistics support to the state to combat the terror menace.
Intelligence agencies are learnt to have provided “a general tip off” to the CRPF authorities on possible militant strikes on one of their camps.
It is not known whether CRPF had raised the scale of security at their camps in Rampur in view of the advance information. The agencies have not ruled out the role of “sleeping cells” behind the attack. UP is officially known to have the largest number of “sleeping terror modules” in the country.
Condemning the attack on the CRPF camp, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said his ministry was in touch with the state government and CRPF authorities.

“A detailed report has been sought about the facts and circumstances of the incident and the authorities concerned have been asked to take immediate and effective measures to identity and trace the culprits and bring them to book,” Patil said in a statement. Reacting to the incident, the main Opposition BJP described the incident being “possibly the first premeditated fidayeen attack in the country’s hinterland”.
Party spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy felt that jehadi outfit modules have positioned themselves deep inside the country and are not just confined to the borders of Kashmir.
He blamed the UPA government’s “soft policies” for the strengthening of terror networks in the country.
BJP Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi who along with BJP President Rajnath Singh left for Rampur, his home constituency, claimed that “more than half of the districts of Uttar Pradesh have become safe havens for terror activities”.
