Haryana and Kerala annexed men’s and women’s title respectively in the 56th Senior National Volleyball Championship which concluded at the SMS Indoor hall here on Tuesday.
Brilliant performance by Sube Singh, Sanjay Kumar and Jitendra Singh helped Haryana trounce Tamilnadu 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 in only 60 minutes while last year runners-up Kerela had to struggle hard for 103 minutes before beating defending champion Railways after 25-27, 22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-10.
Haryana, who had defeated Services 3-1 in the semifinal on Monday night, combined very well against Tamilnadu in the final on the day had last won this championship in 2004.
Earlier, Kerala routed Services 3-0 and Tamilnadu prevailed over West Bengal 3-1 to bag bronze medal in men’s and women’s section respectively.
Nine-time champion Kerela shocked defending champion Railways in a stiff battle. Kerala captain Ashwani S Kumar and Gisha Thomas displayed terrific form as their power packed smashes and deceptive drops elicited no answer from their rivals. Kerala eves started their domination from the third set after squandering the first two.
