Voters' list: Congress sees wanton vetting
Bangalore, DHNS:
A Congress delegation on Monday registered its protest against "indiscriminate" deletion of names from the voters' list.

In a letter to State Chief Electoral Officer R Ramaseshan, the party delegation led by former minister D K Shivakumar and KPCC General Secretary Prakash Rathore said many eligible voters’ names have been deleted from the list mainly in Bangalore Rural district on grounds that they are “bogus” voters.

According to Mr Shivakumar, names of many labourers from Sathnur assembly constituency who worked in Bangalore and other places have been deleted even though the total number of voters accounted for only 72 per cent of the total population in the assembly segment as against nearly 85 per cent in some other assembly segments in the district.

He said officers appointed during the previous JD(S)-BJP rule were wantonly removing names of eligible voters.

Lambani woes
Stating that many eligible Lambani community members did not have voter identity cards, Mr Rathore urged the Commissioner to take special steps for issuing the cards to them.

“There are more than 35 lakh Lambanis in the State, but a majority of them have no voter identity cards,” he reportedly told the Commissioner.

Mr Ramaseshan is said to have assured the delegation that if a complaint was filed against any officer, action would be initiated after conducting inquiry.
