Touching idol: Puttige seer tightlipped

Paryaya Putthige Seer Sugunendratheertha Sripada declined to hatch the suspense whether he is performing the rituals to Lord Krishna by touching the idol inside the sanctum sanctorum. Speaking to media persons here at the Krishna Math, Putthige Seer neither accepted nor denied the fact that he is performing the daily rituals to the Lord by touching the idol.

He informed that the negotiations are on with the other seers of the Astha mutts and added that the seers are keen on a written constitution to the Astha mutts. The Putthige Seer said that Shiroor Pontiff Laxmitheertha Sripada is helping him in performing the rituals and poojas to the Lord. Pejawar pontiff and Kaniyur pontiff have come forward to lend their support to perform the rituals to the Lord, he added.

This itself indicates the factual reality that the Putthige Seer is performing the poojas to the Lord without touching the idol and the rituals which requires to touch the idol is performed by the Shiroor Pontiff. Putthige Seer informed that he has set a committee to work on “Swatchatha Udupi” where cleanliness is given the top priority and have approached 7 to 8 NGO’s for contributions.

Over the past many ceturies the boundaries of our nation have shifted as per the prevailing power structures. At some point, Delhi could have been a foreign country for a seer residing in Udupi. So, it is an artificial distinction to say which is a foreign country and which is not. Even more artificial to ban an otherwise capable Swamiji from religious duties just because of foreign travel. Hindu religion is most flexible. Let us move on and adapt to the changing times.

Swamiji. There is nothing wrong in your touching the idle. Travel overseas including USA could be completed within 22 hours. You are not violating any rules since fasting is possible for a person like you and you have not violated any so called achara. The rules could have been made for earlier days where it was not possible to maintain the achara since ship travel used to take many days. Ignore all arguments and continue to spread Madhwa Philosophy.
