Param Vir Chakra - Work before life ‘ - these words were scribbled by Col. Vasanth Venugopal on a medal he had received as a member of the National Cadet Corps, when he was 20 years old. Who could have imagined that this genial, warm-hearted young man, with the highest sense of integrity would one day put these words into action.
Col. Vasanth Venugopal will be awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously (Ashoka Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield and is equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra during peace time) at the Republic day function in New Delhi on Saturday. It is with immense pride that his parents, wife Subhashini, daughters Rukmini and Yeshoda, and other family members and friends will see his dream come true.
Col Vasanth, who made the supreme sacrifice for his country, till the age of 10 didn't know that soldiers were paid a salary. It came as a pleasant surprise to him that he would actually be paid to do something he loved. His favourite song, `Dil diya hain, jaan bhi denge, ae watan tere liye’ was not just a song for him, but a tenet that he lived his life by.
In today's materialistic world, Vasanth would come across as one of the very few who set high standards for himself and his fellowmen. He had every opportunity to lead a safe, comfortable civilian life, but he believed deep in his heart that his true calling was to serve the country, which he did proudly. He is the perfect icon for today's impressionable youth who take inspiration from many sources. Col Vasanth’s bravery will definitely put him on top in the youths’ list of heroes.
