The occasion was the 50th Janapada Jatre - ‘Suvarna Sambhrama’ that came out in a colourful and enthralling manner by adding on the spirit of Republic Day on Saturday.
Weekend treat
The weekend treat of Janapada Jatre, hosted by State Kannada and Culture department started at St Aloysious College Grounds, Sarvagnanagar, near Halasur lake in Bangalore on Saturday evening. Many people gathered with their family and friends to witness this cultural extravaganza that ran for two and half hours.
Both elders and kids were seen engrossed in watching colourfully dressed artistes in special costumes as they took some acrobatic steps unique to certain folk forms.
Apart from many people viewing the events seated on the grounds the Jatre also drew audience from farther distance - as several passers-by enthusiastically stopped on the road-side and watched.
Folk artistes from different districts of Karnataka performed Yakshagana, Dollu Kunita, Veeragase, Chitti Mela, Karadimakali, Kamsale and Tamate.
To mark the occasion of 60th Republic Day, folk dances of other states like Andhra Pradesh’s Dheemsa, Gujarat’s Garbha, Manipur’s Tangta and Thabal Congbi, Kerala’s Markangali were also performed by local professional teams, trained by renowned dancers, Usha Dathar, Maya Rao and others.
The Jatre will be held at 6 pm on Sunday evening too.
