Handbag creates scare at airport

An unclaimed handbag found in the Meenambakkam international airport early Sunday morning created a scare, official sources said, reports PTI from Chennai.

The officials of Bureau of Civil Aviation have put the bag in a “cool box” for bomb related tests. It would be taken out after 24 hours, officials added. This is the second such recovery within two days.

CPM worker hacked to death

A CPM worker was hacked to death allegedly by some BJP-RSS workers on Sunday morning in Thalassery, reports PTI from Kannur. Police said the CPM worker Jijesh (29) was going home with two others when he was attacked by a group of suspected RSS-BJP workers at Nangarathpeedika around 1.30 am on Sunday. The CPM has called for a day long bundh in Thalassery and the neighbouring Puducherry enclave of Mahe.

Rs 27 lakh looted from post office

Thieves looted Rs 27 lakh from the main post office in Munger on Sunday following which authorities suspended 10 homeguards guarding the post office, PTI reports from Munger, Bihar.

Superintendent of Police, Shalin said some thieves entered the post office in the wee hours of Sunday when the homeguards were asleep, broke open the locker and took away the money.

J J Singh is new Arunachal guv

Former army chief General (retd) Joginder Jaswant Singh was sworn-in as Arunachal Pradesh Governor on Sunday, reports PTI from Itanagar.
Singh’s appointment as the Governor, soon after his retirement from the army in September last year, is being viewed by observers as the Centre’s strong message to streamline administration, as the governor has a special power under Article 371-H of the Constitution in this sensitive border state.

3 children killed in explosion

Three children were killed and two others injured when a box containing gelatin sticks meant for deepening a well exploded in Arai village of Ajmer district on Sunday, reports PTI from Ajmer. The explosion took place when Public Health Engineering Department was digging a well in the area.

While three children, who were critically injured succumbed to injuries in a government hospital, another child and an assistant engineer injured in the explosion were been treated in a hospital.

Passenger dies at airport

A passenger, who came to board a Kolkata-bound flight, died of heart attack at the Kamaraj domestic airport in Chennai, on Sunday, reports PTI from Chennai. Somnath Datta (34), belonging to Tripura, was moving to the check-in area to board the Air Deccan flight when he suffered heart attack and collapsed, airport sources said.
Airport doctors examined the passenger and declared him dead. The body has been kept at Chrompet Government hospital.
