Anand ends up in third position

World champion Viswanathan Anand split points with Russian Vladimir Kramnik in the 13th and final round to share the third spot in Group A at the end of the Corus International Chess tournament on Monday.

Grandmaster Levoin Aronian of Armenia and Magnus Carlsen of Norway shared top honours in the category-20 event after drawing their games against Judit Polgar of Hungary and Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan respectively.

Both Carlsen and Aronian ended with 8 points out of a possible 13 and Anand finished a half point behind on 7.5 along with Radjabov. Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Peter Leko of Hungary finished tied fifth on seven points apiece.

Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi went down to Fabiano Crauana of Italy in the final round tie in Group C.
Results: Group A: Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 7) drew with Loek van Wely (Ned, 5); Judit Polgar (Hun, 6) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm, 8); Veselin Topalov (Bul, 6) drew with Michael Adams (Eng, 6.5); Boris Gelfand (Isr, 5) bt Pavel Eljanov (Ukr, 5); Peter Leko (Hun, 7) bt Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 6); Magnus Carlsen (Nor, 8) drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze, 7.5); V Anand (Ind, 7.5) drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus, 6.5).

Final standings: 1-2: Aronian, Carlsen (8 each); 3-4: Radjabov, Anand (7.5 each); 5-6: Ivanchuk, Leko (7 each); 7-8: Kramnik, Adams (6.5 each); 9-11: Mamedyarov, Polgar, Topalov (6 each); 12-14: Eljanov, Gelfand, van Wely (5 each).

Group B: Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus, 7) drew with Nigel Short (Eng, 8.5); Erwin L’Ami (Ned, 6) drew with Jan Smeets (Ned, 6); Koneru Humpy (Ind, 5.5) drew with Sergei Movsesian (Svk, 9.5); Gabriel Sargissian (Arm, 5) bt Wouter Spoelman (Ned, 4); Ivan Cheparinov (Bul, 6.5) bt Danil Stellwagen (Ned, 6); Michal Krasenkow (Pol, 5) drew with Hou Yifan (Chn, 5); Etienne Bacrot (Fra, 8.5) drew with P. Harikrishna (Ind, 7.5).

Final standings: 1: Movsesian (9.5); 2-3:  Bacrot, Short (8.5 each); 4: Harikrishna (7.5); 5 : Nepomniachtchi (7); 6: Cheparinov (6.5); 7-10: Hou, Stellwagen, Smeets, E. L’Ami (6 each); 11: Humpy (5.5); 12-13: Sargissian, Krasenkow (5 each); 14: W. Spoelman (4). 

Group C: Dennis Ruijgrok (Ned, 2) lt to Irina Krush (Usa, 7); Dimitri Reinderman (Ned, 8) drew with Mark van der Werf (Ned, 6.5); Efstratios Grivas (Gre, 5.5) bt Peng Zhaoqin (Ned, 4.5); Fabiano Caruana (Ita, 10) bt Parimarjan Negi (Ind, 8); Pontus Carlsson (Swe,7.5) bt Friso Nijboer (Ned, 7); Arik Braun (Ger,7) bt Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 4.5); John van der Wiel (Ned, 7) bt Li Shilong (Chn,6).
