Future belongs to meritocracy
By Amrit Sadhana
If we want a better governance, meritocracy has to replace democracy.

Democracy is defined as 'government by the people,' but what quality of people? Nobody has explained it. If the government is run by unconscious, unintelligent people is it going to help the country develop? Osho , for the first time has pointed the flaw in this definition. He has  proposed a new definition : democracy is government by the people of merit.

As the situation is, all the geniuses of the world are outside governments. It is strange! In fact  those geniuses are needed in the government because they can give the best world to humanity, but they are servants of the politicians. The scientists who are making nuclear weapons are in the service of  politicians.
In every country the people of merit are not the people who rule. If  people of merit, meditation or geniuses  manage the world things would be totally different.

Even for the voting right instead of simply having an age limit, add qualification to it. For example, a bachelor's degree should be made mandatory to be able to vote.

In Greek democracy only 6% people had voting rights. Because they had to fulfil certain criteria before the were accepted as voters.

Osho suggests that we should fix merits for each post -- the highest merits. If we want a better governance, meritocracy has to replace democracy. Then perhaps we will see Sakharov not suffering in Siberia, but being the prime minister of the Soviet Union.

Then you will see Yehudi Menuhin perhaps being the president of America. And there are thousands of geniuses around the world who could offer their creative insights to the world.

"Geniuses are never destructive; they are always creative. With a genius president in America, and a genius president in the Soviet Union, a third world war becomes impossible. In fact, with geniuses ruling all over the world, the day will not be far off when they will decide that it is better to make one world rather than divide it into nations, because that solves problems more easily." says OshoA world government can look at the whole world as one humanity. And if there is one world, then there is no need for seventy-five percent of every nation's wealth to be wasted on nuclear weapons, on armies, on other kinds of war materials. If the nations are not separate, the question of war does not arise.

It is not a utopia, it can happen if the intelligentsia drop their inertia and actively participate in the upliftment of society. Technology has united the world. The internet has no boundaries, why stick to the political boundaries which are only divisive and destructive? Osho's clarion call is: "Citizens of the world, unite. You have nothing to lose but misery."

Nice utopian imagination - but do you think it'll work? It's not enough to be a genius - one has to be charismatic enough to make one's genius work! Just installing a bookish genius is not going to improve anyone's life! Also, coming as this is from an Osho point-of-view only makes me more suspicious - so how are genius' to be annointed - via adminstration of food poisoning?

Well said and well thought. Democracy in many countries is pseudo democracy. No one openly dare speak about a politician in the public criticizing him or her in India. But will the politicians let the meritorious rule? Merit must be added to the eligibilty criteria to make one eligible to stand for elections. Hope this is not a cry in the wilderness
