Maharashtra paceman Munaf Patel, placed on stand-by, will replace injured left-arm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh in the Indian squad for the tri-series beginning in Brisbane on Sunday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a press release on Tuesday.
Originally left out of the 16-man party and asked to prove his match fitness, Munaf appears to have won the nod on the back of figures of three for 90 in 26 overs for West Zone in their Duleep Trophy tie against Central in Rajkot, a game watched by national selector Bhupinder Singh. Whether he is actually fit and can last the rigours of at least eight games in 23 days is another matter altogether.
Rudra Pratap sustained a grade one hamstring tear on day two of the Adelaide Test on Friday. Meanwhile, Bengal right-hander Manoj Tiwari will also fly out as cover for the injured Yuvraj Singh once he completes his visa formalities. Yuvraj, who injured his left knee during the Perth Test, is hopeful of being fit for the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The left-hander will see an orthopedic surgeon in Melbourne on Wednesday for further assessment of his injury.
