Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha will be holding its fourth annual music and dance festival at 'Purandara Bhavana', its Centre for Performing Arts, between February 1 and 7. Vidwans Mysore Nagaraj and Dr Manjunath (violin duo); Padma Bhushan awardees Sangeetha Kalanidhi and T V Shankaranarayan (vocalist); Raghavachari and Seshachari – the Hyderabad Brothers (vocalists); Vidushi Roja Kannan (bharathanatyam); Padmashri Mandolin U Sreenivas (Carnatic classical); Vidushi Sowmya (vocal); and Padmashri Kalaimamani Kadri Gopalanath (Carnatic classical on the saxophone) will performing at the festival.
Any connoisseur with an ear for classical music and an eye for dance would relate to these artists and their presentation. In the field of Carnatic classical music, Shankaranarayan, the Hyderabad Brothers, U Sreenivas, Sowmya and Kadri Gopalanath are artists of outstanding merit. Nagaraj and Manjunath are the very talented pair of brothers from Mysore whose has been in the limelight over the years. Roja Kannan on the other hand has impressive credentials.
On the final day, Kadri Gopalanath will be conferred the 'Purandara Award' by the Sabha which carries a citation and Rs 25,000. His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka will hand over the award. The two previous awardees were Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr R K Srikantan, Karnataka’s senior most vocalist and Padmashri M S Gopalakrishnan, a violinist.
Since the inauguration of 'Purandara Bhavana' by the President in July 2004, the Sabha has grown from strength to strength. Apart from around 30 concerts organised by the Sabha each year, they also run a music and dance school whose student strength has increased. In a period of just three years, from 30 to around 420 students are learning as many as 11 disciplines. And their numbers are growing. A few challenged students are also on the roll of the school.
