Governor Rameshwar Thakur has said that education should be used as a tool to counter social evils like carrying nightsoil on the head.
He was speaking at a function organised by Dr B R Ambedkar Development Corporation and National Safai Karmachari Finance and Development Corporation to distribute various facilities to members of the safai karmachari community, in Bangalore on Wednesday.
Stating that he was glad that about 1,000 students belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes were given free education by the Dr Ambedkar Development Corporation, Mr Thakur suggested that the number be increased to two thousand by next year.
He also suggested that 500 students from the safai karmachari community be included in the scheme.
Union Social Justice and Empowerment Secretary Dr Veena Chothre said that the empowerment of weaker sections was possible only if they get financial backing.
