Studying abroad

Dear Sir,
I am studying in 12th and interested in doing my medical course in UK. What are the academic and other requirements needed for this? Can you please suggest some good courses in the field of biology in India apart from medical course?
Mrudula

Dear Mrudula,
I appreciate your long term goal. Since you are about to complete your 12th you can look for opportunities to study medicine. However to study Medicine in UK first of all you need to seek admission in to a degree course with biology subject as a must. While doing this course you need to start appearing for Medical Entrance tests. Please be aware Medical education in UK is highly competitive and needs a lot of hard work and takes long duration. Cost of education at degree level is also far higher compared to Indian education costs. Medical education is the costliest. Keeping all these factors in mind check and see whether your aptitude is suitable for medical education. The component you have is your interest. If this is coupled with aptitude it will help you to pursue medical education successfully provided it is affordable with your family's support.

3) Cost per annum(Fees only)
4) Dates for applying for this academic year
5) Websites for information
Ganesh Babu N

Dear Ganesh Babu,
You have chosen one of the top Business Schools in the world. It has so far produced more than 40 Noble laureates. It has consistently been ranked amongst the worlds top educational institutions in the fields of Business, Medicine, Law and several PhD programmes. It is one of the few remaining colleges which admits students based solely on their academic and extra curricular achievements rather than their ability to pay tuition fee. Most students are eligible to apply for financial aid and brilliant ones sometimes receive 100 per cent tuition waiver. You have to have excellent academic achievement in engineering and a minimum of 3 years work experience. You also have to clear GMAT with a score of 700 and above and TOEFL with a high score. Roughly the cost of the MBA course comes to about 40,000 USD. You can apply either for the Spring semester that starts in January or Fall semester that starts in August of every year. Log on to the college website for more specific details. Apart from Harvard there are several other Business Schools equally popular. It would be better to always keep alternatives to avoid disappointment. The following web sites will give you more information on Management education: www.gmat.org, www.managementcourses.com, www.mbainfo.com , www.mbazone.com
Dear Sir,
I am working abroad and want to do my PG in Civil Engineering in the US.
Sreekanth

Dear Sreekanth,
With a BE in civil engineering and many years of work experience you will not have any difficulty in pursuing a graduate programme in the US. You need to appear for GRE and TOEFL to seek admission for an MS course in any sub stream of civil engineering.
The following websites will help you to narrow down options of universities and to get to know specific costs involved for the course etc. www.gradschools.com, www.petersons.com , http://educationusa.state.gov/graduate also www.infozee.com

Dear Sir,
My friend has done GNM. She wants to go for higher studies in Australia. Is she eligible to get lateral entry in any Australian college? Which University is best for Business education? Which State should she opt for? She wants to work part time.
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
General Nursing & Midwifery course being a diploma, lateral entry in to colleges in Australia is not possible. She has to seek admission in to a regular Undergraduate programme in Nursing. During evaluation of her educational qualifications she may get some course credits, which will help her to get more exposure. At this juncture even after getting admitted to an undergraduate course one will not be allowed to work in the nursing field as the regulations do not allow it. One can work there for 20 hours per week on any general job that fetches some income to help out to live. This facility is allowed to any person who is a full time student.

Dear Sir,
I am studying in the first year engineering (Mechanical) and interested in pursuing my higher studies abroad in a very good university. Mechatronics is my area of interest. I want to know the entrance exams, opportunities and openings for this stream throughout the world.
Praveen Gowda

Dear Praveen Gowda,
Yes Mechatronics is a stream of engineering combining mechanical engineering and electronics. You are already in the first step of acquiring mechanical engineering degree. Countries such as UK, USA, Australia, Germany etc have master's courses in this stream. Also more and more work is being done in research in this field as great technological strides have been made both in mechanical and electronic fields. You can seek entrance in to a good University in any of the countries of your choice including India . To study in the USA you need the GRE and TOEFL scores along with your degree in Engineering. For all other countries only TOEFL or IELTS score is enough. Opportunities and scope in this field are immense and are on the increase in the present technological growth scenario all over the world. Admission to reputed Universities depends on your academic achievements. Right now focus on your academics and start looking for higher studies later.
Ing K Raja Reddy

Respected Sir/Madam,

I am a final year student of B.E. (7th semester, Computer science) studying in a good college in north Karnataka. I am placed in TCS. Since an year or so I am planning to do MS in USA. But because of some personal problems I could not maintain a very high aggregate. My aggregate now is 65%.  Since there is only 1 sem remaining now, I can achieve a maximum aggregate of 66% or so. I read in earlier articles that universities in USA grant admission based on academic performance and GRE and TOEFL scores. I haven't won any prizes also to write in the Statement Of Purpose. What are the chances of me getting admission in a good university in USA in networking field or human computer interaction? Can I still get any financial assistance? What would you advice me further?

Dear Student,
I appreciate your apprehension about your getting admission to MS program in USA with about 66% aggregate. Let me assure you that there are universities that give you admission. It also does not matter that you have not won any medal. What is equally important and that is in your hands even now is firstly to do well in the remaining part of your degree and do well and take good score in GRE and TOEFL. The statement of purpose is mainly to give an indication to university as to how you are going to use your academics to mould your chosen career. Financial help is a totally different matter depending on the availability of funds in chosen university. Some form of assistance by way of part or full fee waiver, awarding teaching assistant's role etc can be tried out depending on your appraisal when you get admitted. Your GRE and TOEFL score matter a lot to achieve this. Also keep in mind that many nationalized banks are providing soft loans for higher education. There are many opportunities for you to bank upon, hence focus on your current academic tasks right now.
