The rules of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme should be relaxed to suit Malnad region, said JD(S) General Secretary H H Devaraj.
Addressing a press meet here on Wednesday, he said “National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is good. Every Gram Panchayat has received a sum of Rs 25 to Rs 30 lakh. But no development work has taken place so far.”
He said neither Zilla Panchayat nor Taluk Panchayat have discussed the matter. Since Gram Panchayat presidents, secretaries do not have knowledge on the scheme, the implementation is difficult. The project should be completed before March 31, 2008. But the labourers are not ready for work for Rs 74 per day.
The minimum wages should be increased to Rs 100 per day.
Mr Devaraj said 95 per cent of roads in Malnad are damaged, he said.
