They raised one lakh rupees for Asha, a Bangalore Archdiocese run rural education project.
Encouraged by the response and support extended by their parish, the Resurrection Parish Youth Group (RPYG) decided to Step Up and make a difference- inviting all of Bangalore to reach out and meet the needs of people around them.
The Step Up! charity concert took place on December 16, bringing together the joy of Christmas, through not only music but also dance. Archbishop Bernard Moras as the chief guest for the evening.
The concert raised funds to provide for the physical and medical needs of the abandoned babies cared for by the Missionaries of Charity, an organisation founded by Mother Teresa.
The majority of these children are physically and mentally challenged. Moved by their concern for these children and the difficulties faced by the nuns, the RPYG chose to voluntarily raise money for the Missionaries of Charity, well aware, of the vows taken by the nuns not to solicit funds but to depend solely on donations received from the society. Sr Raphael and a few of the nuns and children from the Missionaries of Charity attended the concert to support the youth in their efforts.
The concert opened with a moving dance choreography byAnanath Sarella from the host church. This was followed by Our Lady of Vailankani, the finalist from the ICYM's 2007. Pallotine Youth for Jesus followed with some foot-tapping choral numbers.
Primrose Youth Band, sang popular praise and worship songs. St Joseph's PU College dance troupe performed tiger-themed choreography by the renowned Charles 'Charlie' Ma.
The energetic youngsters, from the RPYG, also performed their 2007 prize winning choreography as well as a medley of Indian songs for the local flavour and cultural touch (choreographed by Ananth Sarella, Sylvester Leo and Kim).
The evening was topped off with Atul Kattukaran and Mario adding the professional touch through their Emceeing, the encouraging words spoken by the Archbishop in favour of youth zeal and the moving talk on abandoned babies by sister Raphael.
The funds continue to pour in from all over India and the world- as close as Dubai and as far as Canada.
The RPYG intend to continue to arouse social awareness and responsibility to the needs of others through their creative efforts on an annual basis.
