Davenport in quarterfinals
Auckland, Reuters:

 Former world number one Lindsay Davenport overcame a mid-match concentration lapse before claiming her place in the quarterfinals of the Auckland Classic on Wednesday.

The American beat fifth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

Davenport will now play Italian Sara Errani.

Top seed Vera Zvonareva had no trouble booking her quarter-final berth, beating Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-3.

She will now play local wildcard Marina Erakovic, who scored a 7-6, 7-5 win over American Ashley Harkleroad.
Russian second seed Maria Kirilenko beat Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-4, 6-1 while third seed Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia outplayed Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 6-0, 6-1 and number six Tamira Paszek also advanced.

However, seventh seed Eleni Daniilidou of Greece suffered a shock defeat, beaten 5-7, 4-6 by Aravane Rezai of France.

Robredo ousted
Tommy Robredo was beaten 4-6, 4-6 in straight sets by Agustin Calleri in the Qatar Open, reports Reuters from Doha.

Russian top seed Nikolay Davydenko and third seed Andy Murray of Britain cruised into the second round with resounding wins over Benedikt Dorsch of Germany and Olivier Rochus of Belgium.

Davydenko posted a 6-3, 6-0 win while Murray took four minutes longer to sail past Rochus 6-0, 6-2.
Murray will take on Rainer Schuettler of Germany, who beat Romania's Andrei Pavel 1-6, 6-2, 6-0. In other matches on Tuesday, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat Santiago Ventura of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka beat another Spaniard, qualifier Alberto Martin, 6-2, 6-2.

Mathieu win
Second seed Paul-Henri Mathieu fended off big-serving Australian Chris Guccione 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International, adds Reuters.

Mathieu set up a clash with Australian wildcard entry Joseph Sirianni. Sirianni upset American Sam Querrey 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. German Benjamin Becker eased past American Michael Russell 6-4, 6-4 while Michael Llodra beat Russian Evgeny Korolev 7-6, 6-3.

Mauresmo through
Amelie Mauresmo scoreda 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy to reach the last eight of the Australian Hardcourt Championships in Gold Coast, adds Reuters. The sixth seed will clash with Patty Schnyder of Switzerland. Schnyder beat Italian Francesca Schiavone 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Top seed Nicole Vaidisova registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tatjana Malek of Germany. Vaidisova will now play China's Li Na after she ended the run of Australian wildcard Monique Adamczak 6-3, 6-2.
Defending champion Dinara Safina of Russia battled into the last eight with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over another Italian, Flavia Pennetta. 

Sharapova in semis
World No 5 Maria Sharapova beat rising star Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals of the JB Group Classic exhibition tournament, reports AP from Hong Kong.

Sharapova, playing her second match of the year, dominated her 17-year-old Danish opponent with powerful ground strokes.
