Escape artistes reign ends!
Bangalore, dhns:

‘Escape’ Karthik Kumar’s tryst with freedom ended with his arrest by the City Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths on December 28. True to his alias, 18-year-old Kumar had escaped from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison by tugging onto a lorry that fetched food for prisoners in September last year.

The CCB eventually pulled the curtains on his adventurous run, recovering valuables worth Rs 7.5 lakh from him. He is now back in Central Prison.

The Crime Branch reeled out details of Kumar’s deeds after his prison escape: He was involved in four house burglary cases, including two daylight burglaries in Banaswadi, and a daylight burglary case each in Ramamurthynagar and Mico Layout. He was also charged with stealing property worth Rs 13 lakh, including Rs 6 lakh in cash, before his jail break.

The CCB officials said that after his escape, Kumar posed as a beggar and later joined an old associate Thajju and his uncle Govinda Kumar to commit four burglaries.

The trio had later pledged the stolen gold and silver ornaments at Nandini Layout, Vellore and Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu.

The CCB recovered gold and silver ornaments and cash, all valued at Rs 7.5 lakh. The jewellery was related to the four daylight burglaries reported in Banaswadi, Ramamurthynagar and Mico Layout police station limits. Kumar’s associate Govinda was also arrested. Thajju was still at large.

Held for burglary

In another detention, the CCB nabbed 22-year-old Nasir Khan and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh in connection with a night burglary in Yelahanka police station limits.

He had earlier been arrested by Chandra Layout police and lodged in Parappana Agrahara prison. However, he managed to come out on bail. But he took to crime again.

Constable killed

A constable attached to the Cottonpet police station was killed in a road accident on Thursday.

Shivkumar (34) sustained serious injuries after the autorickshaw in which he was travelling turned turtle while overtaking another vehicle near Konanakunte Cross in Kumarawamy Layout. The victim died on the way to a private hospital. The autorickshaw driver suffered injuries and is said to be out of danger.
