Help desk for electorate
A special help desk has been set up at Mangalore Taluk Office and Mudabidri Special Tahshildar Office for the convenience of the electorate of 141-Bantwal (partial), 143-Ullal, 144-Surathkal and 151-Mudabidri for the forthcoming assembly elections.
The electorate may contact the deputed officers to know their serial number in the voters’ list on the basis of their address and house number. To get the details, electorate may contact Malathi (141-Bantwal-partial), Ramanna (143-Ullal), Ganesh Bhat (144-Surathkal) at 0824-2220587 and Ramachandra (151-Mudabidri) at 08258-238100.
Free OPD at KMC Attavar
KMC Hospital in Attavar has announced free OPD from January 4 to 8 from 9 pm to 6 pm. According to a press release, all the diagnostic investigations and procedure on OPD basis shall attract discount. Green cards will also be issued to all patients who require surgery. Patients who will require admission in the hospital shall also get a discount on the bill, the release added.
Christmas celebrated
The ladies Social Service League of Mangalore celebrated Christmas by distributing sweets and gifts among the needy of the society. They visited Jyothi Niwas Higher Primary School near airport and conducted games for the children. Prizes were distributed by Santa Claus. Various teams visited Bondel Remand Home, Mother Theresa’s home, blind, deaf and dumb mobility centre in Attavar and other places and entertained the inmates. Toys and gifts were distributed to Harijan and migrant children in Hoige Bazaar, informed a press release.
Medical, dental check-up camp
A free medical and dental check-up camp was conducted in Shanthiniketan School at Alevoor on January 2.
According to a press release, Head of the department of Paediatrics at Udupi Dr T M A Pai Hospital Dr Dinesh Nayak inaugurated the camp. Dr Kalyana Chakravarthy and Dr Sweta Singh did the dental screening and check-up of children. Udupi Press Club President Dinesh Kini and teachers of the school were present on the occasion. As many as 126 children were benefited by this camp, the release added.
Big FM’s new year celebration
Big 92.7 FM in Mangalore welcomed the New Year with a unique celebration of sorts. The Big 92.7 FM team along with RJ Devdas Kapikad and RJ Raghavendra visited the Mangalore Central Jail on January 1 and spent time with the jail inmates. The RJ’s also interacted with the inmates taking them on-air to express their views and speak to their families outside. The team also presented a radio to Mangalore Central Jail authorities. The station also played host to actress Ramya who went live on-air with RJ Raghavendra and interacted with the listeners in a special ‘Meet and Greet’ activity.
Chakde 2008 held
The new year eve celebration Chakde 2008 was held at Hotel Motimahal on December 31. There was live music by ‘Wildness’ and a special buffet arranged for the invitees. Competitions like Spot game, Moti King and Queen and Lucky ticket were held. Jossy Rego was selected the Moti King while Neena Shetty became Moti Queen. Managing Director of the Hotel A J Shetty honoured the winners. The prizes for lucky draw- air tickets- were sponsored by Jet airways, Akbar travels and Pan Pacific travels, informed a press release.
Course in caring elderly
Viswas Trust will be organising a course for those who are taking care of elderly people without any training. According to a press release, the course will be held for three days, from 2.30 pm to 5 pm at the family service agency of Roshni Nilaya.
MU Librarian awarded
Librarian of Mangalore University Dr M K Bhandi has been presented the S M Ganguly Award for Librarian of the year 2006 by Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) in recognition of his outstanding contribution in Library and Information Services, informed a press release.

Musical evening held
Weltha’s School of Music organised ‘Students’ Musical Evening-2007’ at Shanthi Nilaya Hall in Balmatta. According to a press release, Karnataka Theological College Principal Dr J S Sadananda inaugurated the programme. Cecilia Albuquerque LRSM from the Royal School of Music in London was the chief guest and also spoke on the occasion. The students of Welthas’ School of Music exhibited their talents through singing and playing musical instruments for about 3 hours, the release added.
City doc awarded
Dean of A B Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences and former president of Indian Dental Association and Indian Orthodontic Society Dr U S Krishna Nayak has been conferred the ‘Education Acumen Award’ by the International Institute of Education and Management for his outstanding achievement in the field of education.
The award was presented by Union minister of state for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal at a function in New Delhi on December 12, informed a press release.

HS Kannada teachers’ assn
“It is hard to derive hopes out of a person who neither holds his childhood memories nor aspires dreams,” said Prof K Chinnappa Gowda. Presiding over a function, organised to inaugurate the taluk-level association of high school Kannada teachers on Saturday, at Balmatta PU college, he pointed out that those children who feel learning is a mere process in academic life, need refresher courses. “Since schools are centres of culture, it is the foremost duty of language teachers to inculcate moral values and expose students to our culture through native language,” he said.
Noted Educationist Amrit Someshwar who inaugurated the programme, dwelt upon improving language base of students, which he felt, takes them on developmental path. M Vasudevraj spoke on the occasion.
