All those in a hurry, watch out. There's no way you can get away after jumping the signal. For the big brother is literally keeping an eye on you 24X7.
The City Traffic police have finally zeroed in on a system that would trap signal jumpers literally in the act. They are installing red light and speed violating enforcement systems in several places at City traffic islands. The first of the systems will be inaugurated in the City on January 5.
To begin with five such enforcement systems have been ordered for the City. Designed and manufactured by Turbo Consultancy Services Private Limited, each red light and speed violating enforcement system will have a red speed two lane system, red speed four lane (twin headed system) and speed curb units built into it. It is also a combined digital red light and/or speed enforcement system that is capable of enforcing red light control (red guard), speed restrictions (speed curb) and both red light and speed curbs (red speed).
This is how the system operates. Sensors, connected and coordinated with cameras and signal lights, will be embedded in the road surface.
As soon as one jumps the signal, the sensors are rendered active and they turn on and the camera clicks the image of the violator red-handed. The violator and his vehicle with its number are literally snapped in the act.
According to a top police officer in the City, the new device will record every detail of the offender and have provision for storing data to serve as a ready reckoner for repeated offenders.
"It was hard to track down offenders because such in-depth information was never available to the police. Now, in addition to a fine amount we can consider suspending the offender's license," explains the officer.
So what's the difference between the 40-odd surveillance cameras installed in the City and the new device?
"These new enforcement cameras automatically click the picture of the offender. It zooms in on the offender in four different phases. While, the surveillance cameras simply monitor the movement, this new device registers the image," observes the officer.
The system is capable of retrieving and storing violation and image data directly from the site. It can record offences 24 hours a day, seven days a week and there is no limit to the number of offences that it can capture red-handed. The system has its advantages: Two camera heads can be connected to the same system, this means, up to four lanes can be monitored at the same time. Front and rear images can be taken of any offence.
A number plate recognition technology can be connected to the system.
The manufacturers also claim that the system is tamper-proof because all the images and data are protected by the use of encryption and data-integrity codes embedded into them.
The system is cost effective as well. Using just one digital equipment means that manpower and vehicle costs would be significantly reduced. There is no need to conduct site visits or develop films.
The system will be installed at Kamaraj Road–Cubbon Road Junction, Deve Gowda Petrol Bunk Junction, IISc Circle Junction, Hennur Road Junction and JP Nagar 24th Main Road Junction to begin with.
The City police have chosen these five locations because a high number of violations are registered in these areas. The device will be installed in more places in the City depending on the outcome of the new experiment.
"We have to watch if these new cameras will instill some sense of discipline in the road users," says the officer.
