These are times of loneliness for the aged people. With sons and daughters going out to work and nobody to look after the parents, the necessity of old age ashrams has increased. But one can find very few of them committed to looking after the elderly with much care and affection. Sri Sai Old Age Ashram is one such Ashram where the aged and the destitutes are given proper attention and care.
Ravikumar, the founder of the Ashram, says, “all expenses towards looking after the health and well-being of the inmates are taken care by us completely.”
There are nearly 40 old people in this Ashram. These people have come from various places including different parts of the City. They are happy under the shelter of Sri Sai Vruddhashrama.
K N Venkatesh, Manager of the Ashram, says inmates come to the Ashram from ‘Abalashrama’, Humanitarian Hospital, Police Commissioner's Office Help Line Division, Beggars' Colony etc.
One of the unique features of this Ashram is that none of the inmates are allowed to do any type of work either in the Ashram or outside. As such, there is no tension or stress of any sort on them. They are here to relax, spend time with other inmates, watch TV, read papers etc.
Ravikumar treats the inmates in the Ashram as his family members. He takes them to the nearby clinic or nursing home if they develop health problems. In fact, Ravikumar had cremated nearly 16 to18 people who had died in the Ashram.
Many a time when Ravikumar tried to contact some of the family members of the elderly people to bring them together, there was no response. He hopes to extend the Ashram's activities so that the inmates can be increased to150. Though he is not willing to ask anybody for any financial assistance to meet the expenses of the ashram, some inmates donate nearly Rs 500 to Rs 600 per person per month, depending upon their financial capacity. But this amount is meagre.
Ravikumar is looking for people who would provide support to the Ashram. He also wants an ambulance so that he can transport unclaimed dead bodies.
