National champion Chetan Anand crashed out of men’s singles draw while top seed Anup Sridhar survived a scare before entering the quarterfinal in the Pramod Mahajan all India Senior ranking badminton tournament here on Thursday.
In a major upset, Ajay Jayaram stunned third seed Chetan 21-13, 26-24 to reach the last eight.
Sridhar too faced stiff resistance from Maharashtra’s Sagar Chopra before eventually pulling off a 21-16, 19-21, 21-15 win in the second round match.
Women’s top seed Saina Nehwal sailed into the last eight with a comfortable 21-3, 21-11 win over Ashwini Ponnappa in the second round to set up a clash with Anita Ohlan in the quarterfinal. Ohlan got the better of Gayatri Vartak 21-17, 21-18. Qualifier N Sikki Reddy scored the upset in the women’s draw knocking off fourth seed Aparna Balan 21-14, 21-19 to storm into the prequarters where she faces Dhanya Nair.
Nair prevailed over B R Meenakshi 23-21, 21-12 in second round. Another qualifier Parssa Naqvi gave a tough fight to third seed Aditi Mutatkar before going down 12-21, 21-17, 12-21.
Mutatkar will take on Abantika Das, who got the better of Parul Rawat 21-17, 21-13 in the second round.
Second seed Trupti Murgunde eased past Neha Pandit 21-13, 21-4 to book her last eight berth where she will meet Sayali Gokhale.
Sayali fended off a strong challenge from Chitralekha to score a 21-11, 11-21, 21-8 win.
