Errors galore in electoral rolls
By Asha Krishnaswamy, DH News Service, Bangalore:
The website - www.ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in - of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer says that it is trying to improve communication between the voters of Karnataka and the department of elections.

has hosted the revised electoral rolls as on January 1, 2008 on the website. You can search your name by click of a mouse, the website says.

But, your search may not yield the desired results as there is no guarantee that your name figures in the revised rolls despite you being a voter from many years or decades. Going by the number of complaints received by the office of the chief electoral officer (OCEO) as well as by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the revised rolls are not foolproof.

Here is a case to show how casually the voters' names have been included in the list. - H N Maharudraiah’s family reside at  #19/37, 11th ‘B’ Cross Vyalikaval, which comes under Malleswaram Assembly Constituency. His son’s name is indicated as Mallvikharjun H M instead of Mallikharjun.

Age jumbled
According to Mallikharjun, a government officer, “In the Kannada version of the list, my father's initial has become A instead of H. His age is 71 but it is written as 73. My initials is H M but it is written in Kannada as ‘Yech’”.
That’s not all. Age of Mallikharjun and his wife has been entered wrongly in the list. “I have brought it to the notice of Assistant Returning Officer Chandrashekar and Revenue Inspector. I  wonder why a simple work like data entry should become a mess like this,” wonders Mallikharjun. In Bangalore, the BBMP and Bangalore Urban District office are vested with the work of  preparing the voters' list. But, now the OCEO is at the receiving end from the voters. Everyday people are calling the OCEO to lodge their complaints. Complaints of names missing have been received different places in the State.

Complaints
The OCEO, after receiving several complaints from the voters, has decided to extend the date of receiving the objections from January 10 to 20.  The government is approximately spending 50 paise for including one voter name in the list. There are nearly 4.25 crore voters, officials sources said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Election Commissioner R Bhattacharya continued revision of electoral roll in Bangalore for the second day on Thursday. The meeting went on till late in the evening. Senior officials of Belgaum, Gulbarga and Mysore divisions attended the meeting.
