BBMP polls to be delayed
Bangalore, DHNS:
Elections for Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike to be delayed further.

The State government has asked Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner to prepare a proposal for delimitation of BBMP wards in accordance with the existing Assembly constituencies.

Term of the Palike’s elected body ended in November 2006. Polls have been delayed since then due to creation of Greater Bangalore by merging seven CMC, one TMC and 110 villages with BMP. Bangalore Urban deputy commissioner has been entrusted with the responsibility of delimitation of BBMP wards. As the government has asked the DC to prepare delimitation proposal, the elections may be delayed further for a few months.

DC M A Sadiq told reporters here on Friday that he had prepared two proposals for 145 wards in BBMP limits. The first proposal was independent of Assembly constituencies.

It was prepared keeping ring road, storm water drain and other infrastructure facilities in mind. “I prepared that proposal thinking that corporation is an independent body and corporators should act independently. Even today I feel that is the ideal proposal”, he said.

The second proposal was based on the Kuldeep Singh committee’s proposal of delimitation of Assembly constituencies. Both the proposals were sent to the State government. “Now, the government has asked us to prepare another proposal on the basis of existing assembly constituencies. It takes some time”, he said.

He said once the proposal is prepared it will be sent to the government for approval and afterwards it will be made public. The public will be given time of 30 days to file objections.

145 wards
Mr Sadiq said there is a provision for creation of 150 wards in BBMP. But he is restricting to 145 wards. “We are mixing up thickly populated small areas with scarcely populated larger areas. In old BMP area population density is more. Whereas in old CMC areas density is less. In future necessity may arise for creation of a few more wards,” he said.
