Farmers court arrest as waste disposal unit work begins
DH News Service, Tumkur:
In the face of stiff opposition from farmers and farmers groups, the district administration kicked off work for the solid waste disposal unit in Ajjagondanahalli.

Early 35 farmers, who protested the setting up of the unit were arrested - of them, eight are women. After the farmers were arrested, the district administration - with the help of the police - inaugurated work on the solid waste disposal unit.

The district administration had acquired land at Ajjagondanahalli in Kora Hobli to establish the waste disposal unit. Though the land was acquired a while ago, the construction of the unit had not begun. In the meanwhile, even without a solid waste disposal unit in Tumkur, the ‘Nirmala Nagara’ project was implemented.
The people were under the opinion that with the introduction of the project, the waste disposal unit was even more necessary. In another development, farmers began to oppose the Ajjagondanahalli plant. But on Friday, the district administration began the construction work.

Among those arrested are Raitha Sangha president B Umesh and Gram Panchayat president Ravi.

anwhile, CPM Secretary Sayeed Mujeeb has condemned the police act of arresting farmers who staged protest here against the construction of solid-waste disposal unit in Kolar, on Friday. Speaking to reporters,  he said “ they are not criminals, they are only expressing their opinion in a democratic way. Moreover, their protest didn’t create violence. Still, Police have arrested them. Our party condemns such an act,”.

He stated  “We need scientific solid-waste disposal unit, even the party is also of the same opinion. But, the district administration failed to communicate with the farmers effectively.  Farmers would have easily accepted, if the authorities concerned  had spoken about money and special package they would get by the project,” Mujib said.
