Threshing on roads in the cities and villages of Srinivasapur taluk has proven dangerous as it has caused several accidents. Due to shortage of oxen the farmers are unable to undertake traditional form of threshing. Moreover, they are unable to hire threshing tractors and other equipment as it is expensive.
Thus, the farmers are mindlessly engaged in threshing by spreading ragi, paddy, maize, horsegram and other grains on the roads to be crushed under the vehicles and separated from the crop plants. However, this kind of threshing has its own set of problems. The dust that emerges from the crops spread on the roads can lead to eye problems.
Also, the cattle that walk on these crops, which might have been affected by diseases like foot and mouth and other contagious diseases can spread the disease to other cattle. Moreover, roadside threshing results in loss of food grains as most of the grains are lost when they are crushed under the vehicles.
Also, the diesel that leaks from the vehicles and gets mixed up with the grains on roads can only affect the health of the humans and animals. Thus, though this roadside threshing is replete with disadvantages the farmers are continuing with this mode of threshing causing accidents, ill health among people and animals.
