“We will make efforts to revive negotiations on the service sector in the Doha round of trade talks, “Rahul Khullar, India’s Chief Negotiator at the Doha Round said here. India’s interest in reviving services negotiations under the Doha round stems from the fact that it would generate employment, put the vast pool of available skills to work and optimise the benefits arising out of having a youthful population, Khullar, who is also the Additional Secretary in Ministry of Commerce said at a meeting organised by the World Bank .
Barriers to trade
“What is of concern is the barriers to trade in services that are likely to emerge in the future,” he said. “If opening trade in services is good for competitiveness, why are we afraid of competition,” he asked.
Dr Aaditya Mattoo, Lead Economist of the World Bank agreed that large benefits would accrue to India and rest of the world from the international integration of the services markets.
