In a major daylight theft, two persons in the guise of customers have stolen Rs 10 lakh cash from the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) office located near Women’s Police Station here on Saturday.
There are three counters in the LIC office, which is a significant business centre of Udupi division and the only centre of Kundapur.
A sum of Rs 10 lakh had been kept in a bag behind one of the counters which was about to be deposited in the bank.
According to the complaint filed in the police station, the money had been lifted by about 11.30 am when one of the personnel was counting the cash.
Two persons entered the LIC office as customers introduced themselves to the officials as prospective customers and said that they wanted to have an LIC policy.
As they were talking to the officials, they managed to divert the attention of the officials, stole money and immediately vacated the place.
It was only a little while later that theft came to light.
Shrewd act
The thieves said to have been speaking Tamil. The daylight theft took in such a shrewd manner that no physical force was used by anyone.
A similar incident of robbery of Rs 9 lakh from a businessman in front of the Canara Bank office here on December 20 last is still alive in the minds of people and the present incident has further worried them.
One should cross a narrow way and two officials to reach the counter from which the cash has been lifted, but two officials were on leave on Saturday.
Hence, doubts are making rounds that the act must be done by someone who knew that the cash would be deposited on the day and the officials were on leave.
Kundapur police are probing into the case.
