Injured pace bowlers S Sreesanth and Munaf Patel went through their paces at the National Cricket Academy under the watchful eyes of Dav Whatmore here on Saturday.
It was also the first official fitness training for the duo after a while. Sreesanth had picked up a shoulder injury during the fifth one-dayer against Pakistan in Jaipur in November last year, preventing him from travelling to Australia for the Test series.
The Kerala paceman is now pinning his hopes on finding a place in the one-day squad for the tri-series Down Under also involving Australia and Sri Lanka. The limited-over squad will be announced on January 19, coinciding with the fourth day of the third Test against the Aussies at Perth.
A lower back injury had troubled Munaf, who reached in the City on Friday night, and forced him to sit out of the one-dayers against Pakistan before making a comeback in the Tests. The injury, however, resurfaced and the selectors had decided to pick up him as the 17th member provided Munaf proves his fitness.
But the Board of Control for Cricket in India officials were clearly unhappy with the Maharashtra pacer after he had missed two Ranji Trophy games. The situation got worsened after the Board officials failed to contact him for a couple of days.
The duo had a bowl at the nets at the KSCA (B) grounds on the day, besides engaging in some light workout at the indoor nets as well as in the gym. The training will continue for a week or so, before assessing their fitness. Robin Uthappa and S Badrinath also attended the training session.
