The pulse polio campaign carried out by the BBMP health officials immunised 5,80,430 children under five years of age, of the estimated target of 7,02,000 children in 100 wards of old BMP and five new zones on Sunday.
During this campaign 82.21 percent of the estimate was immunised compared to the 80.61 per cent achieved during the previous drive. About 9,000 volunteers, 150 doctors and 30 BBMP health staff participated. Volunteers included members from Rotary Club, Lions Club nursing colleges etc. The campaign will continue on January 7, 8 and 9
The pulse polio programme organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare was inaugurated by Governor Rameshwar Thakur. Speaking on the occasion, the governor appealed to the parents of children below five years to utilise the opportunity to immunise their children against the dreaded polio and Hepatitis-B.
“Eradication of polio and and protection against Hepatitis- B is a national resolve.” he said. Administration of the vaccines is the simplest way of preventing polio and jaundice in children, he added.
The 45 clubs of Rotary District 3190 worked in various districts and Bangalore city providing logistical support and food to BBMP medical staff and aanganwadi workers. About 1,500 Rotarians volunteered in maternity centres, health centres and 2,023 outreach centres according to District President Rajendra Rai.
