Live demo of slip disc surgery
A live demonstration of Total Disc Replacement (TDR) surgery to treat cervical disc prolapse was organised by St Philomena’s Hospital and National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore. Surgery was conducted on a 65-year-old man by Dr Hee Hwan Tak, specialist spine surgeon from NUH. The patient had disc prolapses (slip disc) at two levels in the neck-one large prolapse causing pain going down the arm, cause weakness of the hand, said Dr Sujay Rao, Head of Neurosurgery and Pediatric Neurosurgery, St Philomena’s Hospital.
“After TDR, the spine shows excellent mobility on par with the erstwhile normal disc and the patient practically cannot tell the difference from the real thing. Over the years, such patients may expect less wear and tear of the neighbouring segments of the spine, and reduced risk of accelerated disc disease or spondylotic degeneration at other levels,” said Dr Hee.
