If you thought cricket is meant to be played only by the young and fit, think again.
Hanumanthanagar Spurthi Mahila Samaja has organised a ‘Mothers’ and Grannys’ Cricket Tournament’ on January 12 to dispel this myth.
Choodamani Ramachandra, Samaja president, told reporters here on Monday that the tournament will be held after a month-long training session that will conclude on Jan 11.
“We had women below the age of 45 enrolling for the mothers’ category and women between 58 and 75 years in grannys’ category. They are being trained by professional coaches.”
Ms Ramachandra said the coaching camp was started to dispel the notion that cricket was a game of the youth. Four teams of 13 members each will vie with each other in the finals, to be played on January 12 at Kohinoor Fields, at Gavipuram.
The Samaja will also felicitate Ms Shantha Rangaswamy, the first lady captain of the national women’s cricket team.
