Bajaj Auto Ltd, on Tuesday, said it plans to bring out its small car in collaboration with Renault and Nissan within four years but it will not be for Rs 1 lakh.
“While it is hard to put any time-frame, we can say in two-four years we can expect to have the product ready,” Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj told reporters here. BAL showcased its concept car, built on its ‘Lite’ platform along with its light commercial vehicle range. Mr Bajaj said the small car from Bajaj-Renault could have a ‘unique’ transmission, which could be in between manual and automatic.
Mr Rajiv Bajaj, however, declined to give a specific price of the small car. “Definitely, the small car from Bajaj will not be a Rs 1 lakh nor Rs 10 lakh car. Price is not the centre of the product, but it will offer twice the fuel economy that existing products in the market,” he said, adding the car could be powered by both diesel and petrol engines.
BAL and French carmaker Renault are currently undertaking a feasibility study for partnership in the small car project and is expected to be completed by next month, he pointed out. BAL also said it will launch three two-wheelers in the executive and premium segment during 2008. The company would launch two motorcycles — XCD 125 cc DTS-i Sprint and Discover 150 cc DTS-i — and one scooter 125 cc Blade within this year.
