Samithi Convenor Dayananda Swamiji told reporters here on Tuesday that they will be staging a week-long protest in front of the office of the IGP (Southern Range), Mysore, if police security is not provided to the mutt immediately.
They will also hold a “Kannada Mutt Chalo” movement and about 10,000 activists attached to various associations and devotees will stand guard at the mutt, he claimed. Although they have lodged a complaint with the police over death threat to the mutt seer, the Police Department has not bothered to deploy sleuths at the place.
In addition, no action has been taken against the miscreants who attacked the seer and others who were staging a peaceful dharna on December 30. He demanded that the government conduct a judicial probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, he asserted that all the charges made against the seer are baseless. The seer has not trespassed by entering the house as it belongs to the mutt and not to the Choureera family as alleged. The seer had to take shelter in the house so as to protect himself from the miscreants who tried to assault him, he said.
Wadiyar’s gift
He said that the 197 acres of land in question was gifted to the mutt by Veerarajendra Wadiyar.
But, the land was mortgaged to the families of Muttappa and Kalappa.
The government acquired the land following the implementation of the Land Reformation Act. However, the land was re-sanctioned to the mutt later, as per a High Court directive. The two families appealed to the High Court against the move. The bench gave an interim order directing the mutt to re-deliver the land to the families. The mutt approached the Supreme Court against the order.
The Apex Court delivered a judgement to maintain status quo with regard to possession of the land until the disposal of the writ appeal by the High Court and directed that the respondents, Kaveramma and Choureera family members, can harvest the crop in the land in the presence of the petitioner, the mutt seer, and also that an officer appointed by the High Court has to be present on the occasion. Dayananda Swamiji argued that the families were allowed to harvest the crop only in 1995 as per the directions of the Supreme Court.
They need to obtain a fresh direction from the Apex Court in this regard or get an officer appointed by the High Court if they want to harvest the standing crop. “They are not prepared to do either of them and are trying to harvest the crop forcibly by issuing death threats to the seer”, he strongly said.
“We are prepared to stage protests, hold road blocks and give bundh calls to protect the mutt and its property”, he said.
