Prateek Khurana clinched the boys’ under-19 singles crown on the concluding day of the 13th Ramaiah Rajan memorial State-ranking badminton tournament for juniors at the Canara Union courts here on Tuesday.
In a title clash that began promisingly before eventuating into a one-horse race, Khurana overcame MD Anup Kiran in straight games 21-19, 21-15 to seal victory.
The victor and the vanquished then join hands to clinch the doubles crown, though they were pushed all the way by Dhruv Shanbag and Darshan Kulkarni. Khurana and Anup eventually prevailed 21-18, 18-21, 21-18 for the former to complete a grand double and the latter to make up for the disappointment of being beaten in the singles final.
Ajay Patil in the under-16 category and Shiv Nayak in the under-13 section both won the singles titles to go with the doubles crowns in their respective age groups on Monday.
While Nayak had to rally from the loss of the first game to edge out a fighting S Siddarth 13-21, 21-15, 21-17, Patil was hardly challenged during his 21-17, 21-14 triumph over Rajas Jawalkar.
Meanwhile, Jacqueline R Kunnath took home the girls’ under-16 title with a commanding 21-7, 21-13 verdict over Uttara Prakash.
